Dear CYC members,
A red letter day for the staff and residents of Hamilton Island, Friday 13th
will always have another meaning from here on for the members of the CYCHI.
On a balmy Whitsunday evening some 80 plus CYC members and HI residents
joined Glenn Bourke and Peter Teakle at the christening of the Sydney 32
‘Hamilton Mentor’. Glenn conveyed Mr Oatley’s thanks and support of the
mentoring program that Peter Teakle has initiated here on Hamilton Island.
He thanked Peter on behalf of the staff and residents for the opportunity of
them being able to participate in the learn to sail program whilst living
and working on Hamilton Island and confirmed HIE’s support by donating the
marina berth for the vessel.
Miranda-Jade Johns from Island Hair and Beauty performed the ceremonial
pouring of champagne as she christened the ‘Hamilton Mentor’ to the cheers
of the crowd.
Peter has purchased and given the rights to the CYC to use his two yachts,
‘Hamilton Mentor’ a Sydney 32 and ‘Island Mentor’ a Status 19, as sailing
training vessels. The program gives staff an entry level into sailboat
handling on the ‘Island Mentor’, then if they wish to continue they can now
step up into a competent crew course on the ‘Hamilton Mentor’ then further
extend their skills in a race training course with the ‘Hamilton Mentor’ in
race mode.
Peter’s generosity gives staff and residents a fantastic opportunity to
learn to sail, we are very fortunate to have Peter in our midst.
‘Island Mentor’ will be available for members to charter for the twilight
races and ‘Hamilton Mentor’ will be available for students of the CYC’s sail
training program to hone their skills.
I look forward to seeing the ‘Mentors’ out on the water.
